Description
1990 to 2023 estimates of greenhouse gas emissions and removals from forest land, woodlands, urban trees, and harvested wood products compiled by USDA Forest Service researchers. The data includes 33 tables of estimates and 4 tables of quantitative uncertainties for national totals, individual states, regional ownerships, National Forests, and Tribal ownership. Estimates are based primarily on Nationwide Forest Inventory data from the Forest Inventory and Analysis program.
Use Cases
Modeling state-level carbon budgets based on forest land and woodland emissions estimates
Analyzing trends in carbon stocks and land use change across National Forests and Tribal lands
Assessing the quantitative uncertainty of greenhouse gas flux estimates for regional reporting
Comparing emissions and removals from urban trees in settlements versus broader forest land
Strengths
33 tables of estimates provide detailed breakdowns by state, ownership, and National Forests
Time series spans 34 years from 1990 to 2023 for carbon net flux
Data covers the United States and its territories, including American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
Includes 4 tables of quantitative uncertainties for the estimates
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
The description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Provenance
Source
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service
Collection Method
Compiled annually based primarily on Nationwide Forest Inventory data from the Forest Inventory and Analysis program
Time Range
1990-2023 for carbon net flux; 1990-2024 for carbon stocks and land use/land use change area

Geography
United States, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
The estimates should not be compared to those in previously published data packages as the time series is updated with new data and methods.
