Description
Aircraft-based aerosol measurements were collected over the Gulf of America from August 6 to September 22, 2010, during NASA's Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment. The Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment (LARGE) dataset includes ultrafine aerosol number density, dry aerosol size distribution, and absorption and scattering coefficients. This data was gathered using in situ instruments aboard NASA's DC-8, WB-57, and Global Hawk aircraft to study aerosol impacts on tropical storm formation.
Use Cases
Analyzing the relationship between aerosol size statistics (mode, number mean diameters) and tropical storm intensification.
Studying aerosol optical properties like single scattering albedo and angstrom coefficients for climate modeling.
Investigating the vertical and spatial distribution of total and submicron aerosol absorption coefficients over ocean regions.
Correlating non-volatile aerosol number density with cloud condensation nuclei activity in developing hurricanes.
Strengths
Provides a specific time range of data collection from August 6 to September 22, 2010, during the active GRIP campaign.
Includes measurements from multiple sophisticated aircraft platforms (DC-8, WB-57, Global Hawk UAS).
Contains derived aerosol metrics like surface area, mass loading, and extinction coefficients.
Limitations
Specific column names, row counts, and dataset size are not provided by any source, limiting precise assessment of data volume.
Sources conflict on the last updated date, with entries from 2010-09-22 and 2026-03-13, suggesting potential metadata inconsistencies.
