Hyperspectral Antarctic Moss Imagery for Chlorophyll and Leaf Density Analysis

Ground-based imaging spectroscopy data from the Headwall Photonics Micro-Hyperspec VNIR scanner captures reflectance of Antarctic moss beds at ASPA 135. The dataset contains two hyperspectral images, each 3260 by 1004 pixels with 162 spectral bands, acquired on January 10 and 30, 2013. Data were collected and processed by AU_AADC researchers to estimate moss chlorophyll content and leaf density.

Use Cases

• Train SVR models with RBF kernel to predict total chlorophyll content (Cab) from 162-band hyperspectral reflectance values.
• Estimate effective leaf density (LD) of moss turfs using calibrated radiance and reflectance data across 3260x1004 pixel images.
• Compare spectral signatures between DRY and WET moss-bed conditions identified in the dataset for stress detection.
• Analyze spatial resolution of less than 10 mm per pixel to map fine-scale variations in moss vigour within 10-15 m2 plots.

• Very limited sample size of only two research plots and two acquisition dates.
• Geographic scope is restricted to a single Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 135).
• Imagery conditions are not standardized, with one site under full overcast and the other under clear sky.
