Description
18,538 point records of 'wild, relict or remnant' mountain woodland locations across Scotland, compiled for 24 tree and shrub taxa. NatureScot commissioned this dataset to inform landscape-scale restoration, 30x30 goals, and training data for habitat mapping. The dataset includes records for Annex 1 habitats H4080 and H5130.
Use Cases
Identify potential sites for montane woodland restoration based on point locations and habitat directive classifications.
Analyze the distribution of arctic-alpine specialist willows and other taxa for conservation prioritization.
Generate training or validation samples for machine learning models mapping mountain woodland habitats.
Support UK and European biodiversity reporting using records classified for Annex 1 habitats H4080 and H5130.
Strengths
Contains 18,538 specific point records with geographic coordinates (Easting/Northing).
Classifies species into 7 distinct ecological groups, such as arctic-alpine specialist willows and scrub specialists.
Includes 324 records qualified for Annex 1 habitat H4080 and 210 for H5130, supporting regulatory reporting.
Limitations
Recording effort is uneven across geographical areas, which may introduce spatial bias.
Row count and column-level documentation for the full dataset are unknown, limiting pre-download assessment.
Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified.
