Description
December 2018 and January 2020 underwater drop camera surveys recorded seagrass and macroalgae distribution, percentage cover, canopy height, and epiphytic cover in Hardy Inlet. The data includes point observations and derived polygon layers showing presence/absence and percentage cover for each survey year. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation collected this data to monitor estuarine flora.
Use Cases
Map seagrass presence/absence polygons (Hardy_Seagrass_Extent) to analyze changes in distribution between the 2018 and 2020 survey years.
Model relationships between seagrass percentage cover categories and recorded canopy height or epiphytic cover levels from point observations.
Compare macroalgae percentage cover categories against seagrass cover categories at survey sites to assess habitat competition.
Analyze water profile and secchi depth measurements from approximately one-third of sites for correlation with seagrass health indicators.
Strengths
Data includes two distinct temporal snapshots from December 2018 and January 2020, enabling change analysis.
Surveys capture multiple ecological variables: species distribution, percentage cover, canopy height, and epiphytic cover.
Data is provided in multiple geospatial formats (GeoJSON, SHP, GeoPackage) for flexible analysis.
Limitations
Sample data and row counts are unavailable, making it difficult to assess the statistical power of the dataset.
Water profile and secchi depth measurements were only collected at approximately one-third of the survey sites.
The dataset is specific to a single estuary (Hardy Inlet), limiting geographic generalizability.
Provenance
Source
Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Geospatial and Data Services Manager.
Collection Method
Underwater drop camera observations.
Time Range
December 2018 and January 2020.
Freshness
Last updated in March 2026, though the underlying survey data is from 2018 and 2020.
Geography
Hardy Inlet, Western Australia.
License requires custom active acceptance; data is provided as multiple layered geospatial datasets (points and polygons) for different years and metrics.
