WorldView-1 satellite imagery of Heard Island from March 23, 2008, purchased by the Australian Antarctic Division and the University of Tasmania. The dataset consists of two orthorectified image strips merged into a single mosaic for the entire island. This work was completed as part of ASAC project 2939.
Use Cases
- Analyze glacial extent and coastal features using the orthorectified 10 m resolution image mosaic.
- Conduct change detection by comparing this 2008 WorldView-1 mosaic with later Quickbird or IKONOS imagery from the AADC catalogue.
- Validate digital elevation models by assessing the geometric correction applied using the 2002 RADARSAT DEM.
- Study terrain morphology by examining the merged image strips which were acquired from different satellite angles.
Strengths
- Orthorectified using a 10 m resolution RADARSAT DEM for geometric accuracy.
- Covers the entire land area of Heard Island as a single merged mosaic.
Limitations
- Single timestamp from March 2008, limiting temporal analysis.
- Potential geometric offsets between the two source image strips prior to correction.
- Underlying DEM is from 2002, which may not reflect 2008 terrain.
