Description
516 maps comprise the AUSTopo series, providing full continental coverage at a 1:250,000 scale. Each standard map sheet covers approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude, depicting road and rail infrastructure, vegetation, hydrography, and 50-meter contours. The series is produced by Geoscience Australia, with data referenced to GDA94/GDA2020 datums and UTM projection.
Use Cases
Extract road and rail infrastructure features for transportation network analysis.
Analyze hydrography and 50-meter contour data for watershed modeling and terrain analysis.
Use vegetation and locality data for land cover classification and regional planning.
Combine map sheets using geographical coordinates for continent-wide spatial analysis.
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia with 516 map sheets.
Provides topographic detail at a standardized 1:250,000 scale, the largest for full continental coverage.
Includes multiple geographic reference systems (GDA94, GDA2020, AHD) and UTM projection.
Limitations
Data is delivered as static PDF files, requiring extraction for computational analysis.
Map sheets may contain information from surrounding sheets, potentially complicating precise boundary-based queries.
Approximately 50 maps cover non-standard areas, introducing variability in sheet dimensions.
