Historic Sea Surface Temperature of the Great Barrier Reef, 1870 - 2006 (MTSRF 1.1.5, AIMS, source: HadISST 1.1) provides annual mean sea surface temperatures on a 1-degree latitude-longitude grid. The data were derived from the Hadley Centre's HadISST 1.1 database, processed into annual means for 42 grid cells, and include mean values for the periods 1900-1920 and 1980-2005. The dataset was further interpolated over the whole Great Barrier Reef as part of the Reef Atlas project.
Use Cases
- Analyzing long-term sea surface temperature trends in the Great Barrier Reef based on the 1870-2006 time series.
- Modeling climate change impacts on coral reefs based on the difference between the 1900-1920 and 1980-2005 mean periods.
- Creating spatial visualizations of temperature patterns based on the 1-degree gridded and interpolated data.
Strengths
- Covers a long temporal range from 1870 to 2006.
- Provides spatially explicit data on a 1-degree grid for the Great Barrier Reef region.
- Includes processed summary statistics for specific historical periods (1900-1920 and 1980-2005).
Limitations
- Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
