Three studies conducted in the Netherlands examined the relationship between tolerant representations of national history and acceptance of Muslim expressive rights. The research, authored by Anouk Smeekes of Utrecht University, tested hypotheses derived from self-categorization theory. Findings indicate that historical tolerance is associated with greater acceptance, especially among natives with strong national identification, mediated by reduced perceptions of identity incompatibility.
