Description
516 maps comprise the AUSTopo series, covering the entire continent of Australia at a scale of 1:250,000. Each standard map sheet covers an area of approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude. The series, produced by Geoscience Australia, contains natural and constructed features including roads, rail, vegetation, hydrography, and 50-meter contours.
Use Cases
Create regional base maps based on the topographic features including roads, rail, and hydrography.
Analyze terrain and elevation patterns based on the 50-meter contour intervals.
Perform spatial analysis for land management based on the inclusion of vegetation and administrative boundaries.
Combine map sheets for coastal studies based on the series' practice of merging largely ocean sheets with landward neighbours.
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia with 516 map sheets.
Provides data at a consistent 1:250,000 scale, the largest scale for full continental coverage.
Contains multiple feature types including infrastructure, vegetation, hydrography, and contours.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data is provided in PDF format, which may require conversion for direct geospatial analysis.
