Description
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory catalog of 290 X-ray point sources in the IC 348 open cluster, a young (~2-3 million years) stellar group about 310 parsecs away. The data merges four Chandra observations to provide a deeper view, with 185 sources associated with known cluster members. The catalog includes fundamental stellar parameters, infrared excess, H-alpha emission, and mass accretion rates for studying stellar coronae.
Use Cases
Analyzing X-ray luminosity functions based on stellar mass and evolutionary stage mentioned in the description
Investigating correlations between X-ray emission and accretion/disk presence based on H-alpha and infrared excess data
Comparing stellar coronal properties between low-mass and higher-mass stars using the provided stellar parameters
Studying the universality of the Lx/Lbol ratio decline at the low-mass end by comparing with analogous samples like the Orion Nebula Cluster
Strengths
Merges four Chandra observations for a deeper and more spatially complete X-ray view than previous studies
Contains 290 X-ray sources, with 185 associated with known cluster members (~60% detection rate)
Includes fundamental stellar parameters, infrared excess, H-alpha emission, and mass accretion rates for multi-wavelength analysis
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
X-ray flux upper limits for 129 observed but non-detected members are not included in this representation
Provenance
Source
National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Collection Method
Merged data from four Chandra X-ray Observatory exposures, combined with optical/infrared observations and a compiled catalog of IC 348 members.
Time Range
Observational timeframe not specified, but the cluster is described as young (~2-3 million years old).
Freshness
Last updated 2026-03-13 18:44:27.898052; freshness should be verified
Geography
IC 348 open stellar cluster, located approximately 310 parsecs away.
