Description
A 53 ks Chandra X-Ray Observatory image of the young stellar cluster IC 348 detected 215 X-ray sources. The catalog, created by NASA HEASARC in January 2007, includes 115 identified cluster members, 58 likely new members, and X-ray emission from brown dwarfs and protostars. About 40 sources without optical/IR counterparts are likely extragalactic background objects.
Use Cases
Identify new stellar cluster members based on X-ray emission.
Study X-ray luminosity functions for stars with masses between ~0.15 and 2 solar masses.
Analyze X-ray emission from brown dwarfs and candidate brown dwarfs.
Investigate the population of extragalactic background X-ray sources in a cluster field.
Strengths
Deep 53 ks observation with a sensitivity limit of ~1e28 ergs/s, more than 10 times deeper than previous ROSAT images.
215 X-ray sources detected, with optical/IR counterparts identified for most.
X-ray emission detected from four of 13 known brown dwarfs and three of 12 brown dwarf candidates.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
