Description
Nine coastal reference stations around Australia, including sites in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales, provide this dataset. It contains results from phytoplankton pigment composition analysis of water column samples collected monthly, with sampling beginning between 2008 and 2010 and ongoing at seven sites. The data is managed by the Australian Ocean Data Network as part of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS).
Use Cases
Model phytoplankton community structure based on pigment composition data.
Analyze temporal trends in marine primary production based on long-term sampling.
Compare biogeochemical conditions across different Australian coastal regions based on the nine station locations.
Study water column biogeochemistry based on samples taken from multiple depths (0-50m).
Strengths
Long-term monitoring with sampling ongoing since between 2008 and 2010.
Spatial coverage includes nine distinct coastal reference stations around Australia.
Vertical profile data from the complete water column (0-50m) and specific instrument depths.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Sampling ceased at two sites (Ningaloo and Esperance) in 2013, creating temporal gaps.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance
Source
Integrated Marine Observing Systems (IMOS) National Mooring Network, Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Field sampling and laboratory HPLC pigment analysis, as per the IMOS Biogeochemical Operations Manual.
Time Range
2008-09-29 to present (ongoing at 7 sites).
Freshness
Last updated 2026-04-16 16:38:20.025414; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Coastal waters of Australia: Maria Island (TAS), Kangaroo Island (SA), Esperance (WA), Rottnest Island (WA), Ningaloo (WA), Darwin (NT), Yongala (QLD), North Stradbroke Island (QLD), Port Hacking (NSW).
This dataset has been superseded by a combined biogeochemical parameters collection; users should verify if the newer collection is more appropriate for their needs.
