Description
Nine Australian coastal stations have collected monthly water samples since 2008, measuring salinity, carbon, alkalinity, oxygen, and nutrients. Sampling began between September 2008 and November 2010 and is ongoing for seven sites, while two Western Australian sites ceased in 2013. The data is part of the Integrated Marine Observing Systems (IMOS) National Mooring Network and includes historical records from CSIRO for three sites dating back to the 1940s.
Use Cases
Analyze long-term trends in coastal nutrient concentrations based on monthly silicate, ammonium, nitrite/nitrate, and phosphate measurements.
Model ocean carbon cycles based on alkalinity and carbon data collected from nine reference stations.
Assess water quality and oxygen levels for marine ecosystem health monitoring across distinct Australian coastal regions.
Compare historical biogeochemical conditions using CSIRO coastal monitoring data from 1944-2010 for three sites.
Strengths
Data collection spans multiple sites across Australia, including Maria Island, Kangaroo Island, Esperance, Rottnest Island, Ningaloo, Darwin, Yongala, North Stradbroke Island, and Port Hacking.
Monthly sampling regime provides a consistent temporal resolution for seven ongoing stations.
Includes historical data from CSIRO's Coastal Monitoring program for three sites, with records dating back to 1944.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
This dataset has been superseded by a newer combined collection, suggesting it may not be the most current version.
Provenance
Source
Integrated Marine Observing Systems (IMOS) National Mooring Network, Australian Ocean Data Network.
Collection Method
Monthly (or three-monthly for some sites) field sampling off small vessels, with samples analyzed for biogeochemical parameters.
Time Range
Sampling began between 2008-2010 and is ongoing; historical data for three sites ranges from 1944 to 2010.
Freshness

Geography
Nine coastal stations around Australia: Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales.
This dataset has been superseded by a newer combined collection; users should verify if the newer dataset is more appropriate for their needs.
