Description
Monthly (or 3-monthly at some sites) biomass sampling of zooplankton communities at nine stations around the Australian coastline, with some data from Port Hacking dating back to 2002. The dataset, part of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), includes community composition, dry weight biomass, and size spectrum analysis. Data is managed by the Australian Ocean Data Network and is interoperable with other national and international programs.
Use Cases
Analyze temporal trends in zooplankton biomass (mg/m3) based on monthly sampling.
Study changes in marine community composition (Taxon/m3) across different Australian coastal regions.
Conduct size spectrum analysis of zooplankton populations using Zooscan data.
Compare historical sampling methods (pre-2009 Port Hacking net) with current standardized protocols.
Strengths
Sampling conducted at nine reference stations around the Australian coastline, providing geographic coverage.
Regular monthly sampling schedule (3-monthly at Esperance and Ningaloo) supports time-series analysis.
Standardized sampling method using a 60 cm diameter drop net falling at 1 m/s, designed to sample on descent only.
Data is planned to be interoperable with other national and international marine observing programs.
Limitations
This dataset has been superseded by a newer collection, as noted in the description.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance
Source
Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) National Mooring Network, analyzed by the plankton ecology lab.
Collection Method
Samples collected via drop net from small vessels at fixed stations, with samples fixed in formalin or frozen for molecular analysis.
Time Range
Ongoing monthly sampling; includes Port Hacking data from 2002 to January 2009.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-04-10 17:45:34.584969; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Nine stations around the Australian coastline.
This dataset is noted as superseded. Users should verify if the newer 'IMOS - Zooplankton Abundance and Biomass (reference stations)' collection is more appropriate for their needs.
