The 2004 Sumatra earthquake was the most lethal natural disaster of modern times, surprising scientists who underestimated the region's seismic potential. This Australian-Indonesian collaboration produced a modern earthquake hazard map and aimed to build sustainable scientific capacity for future risk reduction. The project was led by Prof. Phil R.
