NASA's IMP-8 satellite has collected measurements of solar wind plasma, magnetic fields, and energetic particles since its launch in October 1973. Data includes directional intensity of positive ions and electrons across energy ranges from 5 eV to 20 keV in the solar wind, magnetosheath, and magnetotail. The dataset is maintained by SCIOPS and includes time-series data at resolutions from 12 seconds to hourly averages.
Data is accessed via anonymous FTP at NSSDC; users may need to handle legacy data formats. Magnetosheath data requires sourcing from specific excluded datasets. Understanding the different data products (e.g., PROMIS period, merged datasets) is necessary for correct application.
