Global gridded maps for selected soil parameters, including soil texture, were produced by the International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project, Initiative II (ISLSCP II). The data set provides 36 files at a 1.0 by 1.0 degree spatial resolution and for two soil depths, adjusted to match a land/water mask. It was derived from methods developed by the Global Soil Data Task, coordinated by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme.
Use Cases
- Modeling soil-water interactions based on gridded soil texture parameters
- Analyzing global soil property distributions based on the 1-degree resolution maps
- Integrating soil data into climate models based on the standardized land/water mask
Strengths
- Data is provided at a consistent 1.0 by 1.0 degree spatial resolution
- Includes 36 data files covering multiple soil parameters
- All layers have been adjusted to match a standardized land/water mask
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
- Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified
