JERS-1 Satellite VNIR System Corrected Imagery

Eight spectral bands from visible to shortwave infrared were captured by the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 Optical Sensor. The European Space Agency provides these products, which have undergone vertical and horizontal destriping corrections and pixel resampling to 18 x 18 meters. Data acquisition concluded in 1998.

Use Cases

• Analyze land cover changes from 1992 to 1998 using the eight spectral bands.

Strengths

• Products are available for all four VNIR sensor bands
• Radiometric values are expanded from a range of [0,63] to [0,255] for enhanced contrast
• Pixel size is standardized to 18 x 18 meters using a cubic convolution algorithm

Limitations

• Cloud coverage was assigned manually, not algorithmically, introducing potential inconsistency
• Nadir band 3 and forward band 4 have known coregistration issues due to missing attitude data
• Quality control was performed only on a subset of the dataset, not every individual frame
