Jornada Long Term Ecological Research Network data documents changes in soil resource distribution as an index of desertification in semiarid lands. The project studies over 100,000 hectares of the Chihuahuan Desert in southern New Mexico, funded by the National Science Foundation. Research focuses on the hypothesis that vegetation change from grassland to shrubland creates patchy 'islands of fertility' under shrubs.
