Description
Observational data from the Kelp Ecosystem Ecology Network (KEEN) protocol, collected via transects on rocky reefs worldwide. The dataset includes site information, fish counts by size class, quadrat and band transect sampling, percent cover of algae and invertebrates, and kelp morphometrics. Data files are provided by the Australian Ocean Data Network and were last updated on 2026-06 04.
Use Cases
Modeling fish community structure based on counts by size class mentioned in the description
Analyzing spatial patterns of sessile organism cover based on percent cover data
Studying kelp forest health and morphology using the included kelp morphometrics
Comparing biodiversity metrics across global rocky reef sites using the standardized KEEN protocol
Strengths
Data collected using a standardized global protocol (KEEN) ensuring methodological consistency
Includes multiple observational components: site data, fish counts, quadrat sampling, and percent cover
Dataset is actively maintained, with a last update recorded on 2026-06-04
Limitations
Row count and dataset scale are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the specific network sites
