Description
Kenya's administrative boundaries, drainage, agro-climatic zones, and infrastructure were compiled at scales of 1:1,000,000 and 1:2,000,000. The dataset includes rainfall, potential evapotranspiration (PET), and temperature information collected from 79 stations, with records spanning from 1982 to 1991. It was created by the Canadian Land data Systems Division in collaboration with the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture and the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Use Cases
Analyze correlations between agro-climatic zones and mean annual rainfall for agricultural suitability mapping.
Model potential evapotranspiration (PET) and temperature against administrative district boundaries for water resource planning.
Integrate drainage and river network data with infrastructure layers for flood risk assessment.
Join historical rainfall station data from 1982-1991 with provincial boundaries for climate trend analysis.
Strengths
Rainfall data sourced from 79 meteorological stations.
Spatial data compiled at detailed scales of 1:1,000,000 for features like rivers and administrative boundaries.
Climate records cover a multi-year period from 1982 to 1991.
Limitations
Rainfall data is temporally stale, with the latest records from 1991.
Specific row counts, column names, and file sizes for the vector data are unknown.
Source maps for some layers, like mean annual rainfall, date back to 1966.
Provenance
Source
Kenya Ministry of Agriculture, Survey of Kenya maps, Kenya Meteorological Department, and Kenya Rangeland Ecological Monitoring Unit (KREMU/DRSRS).
Collection Method
Scanned and compiled from physical maps and station records by the Canadian Land data Systems Division in response to a GRID request.
Time Range
Rainfall data primarily from 1982 to 1991; source map dates vary, with some from 1966.
Geography
Kenya.
Primary data files are in legacy ArcInfo Export (.E00) format, requiring specialized GIS software for access; specific column structures and join keys are not documented.
