A laboratory study by Geoscience Australia determined effective methods for detecting C10 to C40 hydrocarbons in marine sediments at natural oil seeps. Results indicate a commercially available method using hexane extraction and gas chromatography is effective for concentrations between 50 to 5,000 ppm. The study also found GC-MS to be effective for screening samples below 50 ppm oil charge.
