Description
LCM2007 is a 1km-resolution raster map classifying the dominant land cover type for each square kilometer across Great Britain. This dataset updates previous national land cover maps using a computer classification of satellite imagery from Landsat, IRS, and SPOT sensors, following the JNCC Broad Habitats nomenclature.
Use Cases
Train a semantic segmentation model to classify satellite imagery into JNCC Broad Habitats using the 1km raster grid as labels.
Analyze spatial patterns of dominant land cover classes across Great Britain for environmental monitoring.
Compare the 2007 dominant target class distribution with earlier LCM1990 or LCM2000 maps to study land use change.
Strengths
Provides full coverage of Great Britain at a 1km spatial resolution.
Updates and upgrades two prior national land cover maps (LCMGB 1990 and LCM2000), offering a temporal series.
Classified using the standardized Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Broad Habitats nomenclature.
Limitations
Dataset is listed as withdrawn, which may indicate superseded versions or unresolved data issues.
Limited to the dominant target class per 1km square, losing detail on sub-grid land cover mixtures.
Covers only Great Britain, excluding Northern Ireland from this specific raster version.
