Description
1990 salinity mapping for South West Western Australia, vectorized from a 25-meter pixel raster. The dataset identifies severely salt-affected land using satellite imagery, topographic data, and ground information, with post-processing to remove urban areas. It was created by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
Use Cases
Analyze the spatial distribution of severely salt-affected land from the 1990 vectorized mapping.
Compare this 1990 salinity extent with later estimates to detect expansions or improvements in land condition.
Integrate the vectorized salinity data with ancillary GIS datasets for regional environmental modeling.
Use the urban-area-removed polygons for land use planning and agricultural impact assessments.
Strengths
Derived from a multi-source methodology using satellite imagery, topographic data, and ground information.
Original raster data provided 25-meter pixel resolution for detailed spatial analysis.
Post-processed to remove urban areas, improving focus on agricultural and natural landscapes.
Limitations
Represents a single snapshot from 1990; changes may have occurred without interim updates.
Focus is limited to the severe salinity class, excluding moderate or potential salinity areas.
Vector conversion and post-processing may introduce generalization errors from the original raster.
Provenance
Source
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Geographic Information Services.
Collection Method
Satellite imagery (Landsat TM), high-resolution topographic data, ground information, and ancillary GIS data processed with a spatial-temporal methodology.
Time Range
1990.
Freshness
Methodology updated in 2022, but the underlying spatial data reflects the 1990 period.
Geography
