Description
Two ground-based observation campaigns recorded fires near Maraba, Para, Brazil from November 3-5, 2001, and between Cuiaba and Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, Brazil from July 12-15, 2002. Data collected by visual inspection from roads include fire position, time, estimated size, and vegetation type burned. This dataset provides localized, in-situ validation for satellite-derived fire products in the Amazon region.
Use Cases
Validating satellite fire detection algorithms based on precise ground-truth location and time data.
Analyzing relationships between fire characteristics and vegetation type burned.
Studying diurnal patterns of fire activity from daylight-hour visual observations.
Calibrating regional fire emission models using estimates of fire size.
Strengths
Provides precise ground-truth data for two distinct field campaigns in 2001 and 2002.
Contains multiple observed fire attributes: position, time, size, and vegetation type.
Dataset is hosted by NASA, indicating a level of curation and authority.
Limitations
Metadata conflicts: one platform shows a last updated date of 2026-04-10, while the authoritative source shows 2002-07-15, suggesting potential metadata errors.
Limited temporal scope: observations cover only eight total days across two years.
Sparse column metadata: specific column names and data formats are not provided.
