Description
This dataset contains results from a two-year nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization experiment in a 6-year-old secondary forest on an abandoned cattle pasture in Pará, Brazil. The study, conducted by NASA, measured tree biomass growth, soil nutrient uptake, and greenhouse gas emissions from 1999 to 2005. It provides detailed measurements on tree response to nutrient addition in a highly weathered, nutrient-poor Oxisol soil.
Use Cases
Analyzing tree biomass growth response to nitrogen-only versus combined nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization treatments.
Studying soil nutrient dynamics, including phosphorus uptake by plants and nitrogen retention in soil organic pools.
Investigating short-term pulses of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide emissions following fertilizer application.
Examining changes in soil faunal abundance in fertilized plots compared to control plots.
Assessing net nitrogen mineralization and nitrification rates to understand soil immobilization potential.
Strengths
Data originates from a controlled field experiment with specific treatments (N, P, N+P, control) over two years.
Measurements include multiple response variables: tree biomass, soil nutrients, gas emissions, and soil fauna.
Study site is well-defined: a 6-year-old secondary forest on a clayey Oxisol in Pará, Brazil.
Limitations
Key metadata such as row count, column names, and exact file structure are unavailable from all sources.
Conflicting last-update dates exist between platforms (2005-07 31 vs. 2026-03-13), suggesting potential metadata errors.
The dataset's license is ambiguously listed as 'other-license-specified' on Data.gov, requiring further verification.

License details are not clearly specified; users should verify terms before use. The 2026 update date on Data.gov is inconsistent with the study period and likely a metadata error.
