Description
The Midland Valley of Scotland is the geographic scope of this raster dataset representing depth in metres to the top of the Upper Devonian (Kinnesswood Formation). It was developed by Kearsey, T.I., Receveur, M. and Monaghan, A.A. in 2024 for a model of hot sedimentary aquifer geothermal potential. The model is presented with high uncertainty.
Use Cases
Modeling geothermal potential based on depth to the Upper Devonian strata.
Assessing subsurface heat resources in hot sedimentary aquifers based on the geological model.
Analyzing spatial uncertainty in geological interpretations based on limited borehole and seismic data.
Strengths
Model is based on published BGS geology maps with a specific re-interpretation of the Kinnesswood Formation.
The dataset provides a specific depth measurement in metres for a defined geological unit.
Limitations
The model is presented with high uncertainty, linked to sparse borehole data and poor seismic reflection in key areas.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
