Description
The Southern Ocean Time Series (SOTS) dataset contains temporal and compositional data from a 1000-meter sediment trap deployed between 2010 and 2019. It provides concentration data for 40 trace metals and isotopes (TEIs) and derived lithogenic particle fluxes for key tracers like Al, Fe, Ti, and Th. This data, collected by the Australian Ocean Data Network, was used to estimate seasonal and interannual lithogenic particle flux and dust deposition in the subantarctic Southern Ocean.
Use Cases
Estimating seasonal and interannual lithogenic particle flux in the subantarctic Southern Ocean based on Al, Ti, Fe, and Th tracer data.
Assessing anthropogenic influences on marine particles based on V and Pb tracer concentrations mentioned in the description.
Examining particle composition, sources, and provenance in the Southern Ocean using the multi-tracer lithogenic flux data.
Contextualizing dust deposition estimates with particle trajectory reanalysis and satellite data products as described.
Strengths
Covers a multi-year time series from 2010 to 2019, allowing for analysis of interannual variability.
Includes data for 40 trace metals and isotopes (TEIs), providing a detailed chemical profile of sinking particles.
Derives lithogenic particle fluxes using multiple tracers (Al, Fe, Ti, Th) and methods, offering robustness checks.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the single sediment trap location south of Australia.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN portal), building on data published in Wynn-Edwards et al. (2020).
Collection Method
Samples collected via sediment trap deployments, with TEI concentrations analyzed using High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS).
Time Range
2010 to 2019
