Description
2010 data provides age-standardized inpatient separation rates per 100,000 population for selected conditions across Alberta's 132 Local Geographic Areas. The dataset covers seven conditions, including Asthma, Diabetes, and Ischemic Heart Diseases, enabling comparisons across regions with different age structures. It was published by Alberta Health in February 2013 as part of the Primary Health Care - Community Profiles report.
Use Cases
Compare age-standardized separation rates for conditions like Asthma or Diabetes across the 132 Local Geographic Areas to identify regional health disparities.
Analyze patterns in inpatient utilization for Mental and Behavioural Disorders due to Psychoactive Substance Use versus Pneumonia across different LGAs.
Benchmark age-standardized rates for Ischemic Heart Diseases or Pulmonary Heart Diseases at the Alberta provincial level against specific LGAs.
Assess the correlation between separation rates for Influenza and Pneumonia across geographic areas during the 2010 fiscal year.
Strengths
Data is age-standardized, enabling direct comparison of health event rates across 132 geographic areas with different population age structures.
Covers seven analytically distinct health conditions, including chronic (Diabetes, Asthma), infectious (Influenza, Pneumonia), and behavioral disorders.
Provides rates at both the detailed Local Geographic Area level and the aggregated Alberta provincial level for benchmarking.
Limitations
Contains data only for the 2010 fiscal year, limiting longitudinal or trend analysis.
The specific row count, column count, and underlying separation numbers are unknown, preventing assessment of granular statistical power.
Data is over a decade old (published 2013), so findings may not reflect current healthcare utilization patterns.
Provenance
Source
Government of Alberta, published as part of the Alberta Health Primary Health Care - Community Profiles report.
Collection Method
Derived from hospital abstracts based on information gathered at patient discharge (separations), age-standardized per 100,000 population.
Time Range
2010 fiscal year.
