Description
From October 1991 to August 1998, this collection contains sidescan sonar, high-resolution seismic-reflection, bathymetric, textural, and bibliographic data for Long Island Sound. The data were compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Coastal and Marine Geology Program to study sediment distribution, controlling processes, and benthic community relationships. Continuous-coverage acoustic images from closely-spaced survey grids are stored as TIF files.
Use Cases
Mapping seafloor sediment types based on sidescan sonar acoustic backscatter.
Analyzing subsurface geological structures using high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles.
Modeling bathymetry and seafloor processes from collected depth and textural data.
Investigating relationships between benthic communities and geologic substrate.
Strengths
Contains continuous-coverage acoustic imagery from surveys with ship tracks spaced 150 meters apart.
Data collection spans a multi-year period from 1991 to 1998 under a defined scientific program.
Includes multiple complementary data types (sidescan, seismic, bathymetry) for integrated analysis.
Limitations
Metadata completeness is low; specific column names, row counts, and file sizes are not provided.
Conflicting 'last updated' dates (1998 vs. 2026) create uncertainty about metadata freshness.
The dataset's original CD-ROM format may present accessibility challenges for modern systems.
