Description
Bathymetry products from a 2016 seismic survey over the Lord Howe Rise, a submerged plateau in Australian waters. The survey was conducted by Geoscience Australia and JAMSTEC from March to May 2016, covering an area of 62,360 km². Eight bathymetry grids with 50 to 80-meter resolution were produced using a shipborne 12 KHz sonar system.
Use Cases
Modeling seafloor topography for geological research based on multibeam bathymetry data.
Selecting potential deep-sea drilling sites based on seabed structure and depth.
Analyzing the morphology of the Lord Howe Rise plateau based on high-resolution bathymetric grids.
Supporting marine spatial planning and habitat mapping based on detailed depth information.
Strengths
Covers a large survey area of 62,360 square kilometers.
Provides high-resolution bathymetry grids at 50 to 80-meter resolution.
Data was collected by established scientific institutions (Geoscience Australia and JAMSTEC) for a specific research proposal.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The dataset is explicitly not to be used for navigational purposes, limiting its application scope.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia (GA) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
Collection Method
Multibeam bathymetry data acquired during the KR1605 survey onboard the RV Kairei using a shipborne 12 KHz sonar system.
Time Range
Survey conducted from 17 March to 16 May 2016.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-06-05 06:46:53.959849; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Lord Howe Rise, a submerged plateau extending from southwest New Caledonia to west of New Zealand, largely within Australian marine jurisdiction at depths of 1000-3000m.
Dataset is not to be used for navigational purposes.
