Description
From 17 March to 16 May 2016, Geoscience Australia and JAMSTEC collected multibeam bathymetry data covering 62,360 km² of the Lord Howe Rise plateau. The dataset contains eight bathymetry grids with 50 to 80m resolution, produced from a shipborne 12 KHz sonar system during survey KR1605. This work supports site assessment for a potential International Ocean Discovery Program drilling proposal.
Use Cases
Modeling seafloor topography based on 50-80m resolution bathymetry grids
Selecting deep-sea drilling sites based on seismic survey data
Analyzing the structure of the Lord Howe Rise submerged plateau based on bathymetric coverage
Integrating bathymetry data with other marine geological surveys for regional analysis
Strengths
Covers a large, defined area of 62,360 km²
Provides eight specific bathymetry grids with 50 to 80m resolution
Data collected by authoritative institutions (Geoscience Australia and JAMSTEC) during a dedicated 2016 survey
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
