A comparative genomic analysis of two extremely radiation-resistant bacteria, Deinococcus geothermalis and Deinococcus radiodurans, was conducted by Kira S. Makarova of the National Institutes of Health. The study reports the whole-genome sequence of the thermophile D. geothermalis and compares it to the previously sequenced D. radiodurans. Results weaken arguments for certain resistance mechanisms and strengthen the case for roles of manganese/iron homeostasis and cell-cleaning systems.
