Description
NASA HEASARC provides a catalog of 33 discrete X-ray sources detected in a 60-ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the galaxy NGC 3556 (M108). The observation was taken on 2001 September 8-9, and the table was created in August 2015 based on CDS Catalog J/ApJ/598/969. It includes candidate identifications for the galactic nucleus, an ultraluminous X-ray source, an X-ray binary, and giant H II regions.
Use Cases
Identify and classify discrete X-ray sources based on the catalog of 33 objects.
Study ultraluminous X-ray sources and potential intermediate-mass black holes based on the candidate mentioned.
Analyze the correlation between X-ray sources and radio counterparts based on the identified X-ray binary and H II regions.
Investigate extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission and its substructures, such as superbubbles or chimneys.
Strengths
Catalog is derived from a dedicated 60-ks observation by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, a high-resolution space telescope.
Includes multiwavelength analysis and candidate identifications for specific source types like the galactic nucleus and an ultraluminous X-ray source.
Describes significant spatial features, including diffuse emission extending ~10 kpc radially and >~4 kpc from the galactic plane.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is from a single observation in 2001; temporal analysis is not possible.
