Description
Approximately 400 field validation locations were surveyed using a Benthic Observation Survey System and stereo-video to map seagrass beds in the Furneaux Group of islands, Tasmania. The project, in partnership with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, produced probability, percent cover, and binary presence maps for seagrass, macroalgae, and sand. Data was last updated on 2026-04-28 by the Australian Ocean Data Network.
Use Cases
Modeling seagrass habitat probability based on satellite imagery and bathymetric LiDAR data mentioned in the description.
Estimating blue carbon storage potential based on mapped seagrass extent and composition.
Validating remote sensing outputs for benthic cover using field data from approximately 400 locations.
Analyzing species composition and coverage of macroalgae assemblages in temperate coastal waters.
Strengths
Field validation at approximately 400 locations using BOSS and stereo-uBRUV systems.
High-resolution mapping using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery at 10 m resolution.
Multiple derived map products including continuous probability surfaces and quantitative percent cover estimates.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Mapping is constrained to depths of approximately 30 m, the limit of reliable optical detection.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.

Collection Method
A combination of close-range remote sensing using Sentinel-2 imagery, bathymetric LiDAR, oceanographic variables, and field validation campaigns.

Geography
Coastal waters surrounding Flinders Island in the Furneaux Group (Tayaritja), north-eastern Tasmania, Australia.
Data is available in WMS and WFS formats, which may require specific geospatial tools for access and analysis.
