Measurements of oceanic carbon dioxide and ammonium concentrations were collected during the Pelagia 109 research cruise in July-August 1997. The dataset contains 17 measurements of total inorganic carbon (TCO2) and 112 measurements of ammonium (NH4) per unit volume of the water column. Data was gathered by researcher Wim Helder as part of the JGOFS and OMEX programs.
Use Cases
- Analyze the relationship between TCO2 concentration and spatial location (latitude, longitude) to map carbon distribution.
- Model NH4 concentration variability across the sampled water column to study nutrient upwelling dynamics.
- Correlate TCO2 and NH4 measurements from the same cruise to investigate coupled carbon and nitrogen cycles.
- Use the cruise's temporal (July-August 1997) and spatial coverage (+42N to +43N, +9W to +12W) to establish a seasonal baseline for the North-Western Iberian Slope.
Strengths
- Contains 112 precise ammonium (NH4) concentration measurements.
- Provides 17 total inorganic carbon (TCO2) measurements with a documented methodology (filtration, acidification, indicator photometry).
- Clear spatiotemporal scope: data from a specific 3-week cruise in July-August 1997 within defined coordinates.
Limitations
- Small sample size for TCO2 with only 17 data points.
- Limited geographic scope to a specific transect in the North-East Atlantic.
- Data is over 25 years old, representing a historical snapshot.
