173 discrete measurements of dissolved dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and 160 of dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) were collected from the North East Atlantic water column. Researcher Chong Nguyen Ba gathered this data during the Charles Darwin 83 cruise for the OMEX programme. The sampling occurred over a one-month period from December 13, 1993, to January 13, 1994.
Use Cases
- Modeling DMS sea-to-air flux using concentration measurements and the documented geospatial coordinates (+25N to +50N, +6W to +34W).
- Analyzing correlations between DMS and DMSP concentration measurements to understand precursor-product relationships in seawater.
- Investigating spatial distribution patterns of organosulfur compounds across the documented North East Atlantic cruise track.
- Validating satellite-derived ocean sulfur product algorithms with in-situ DMS and DMSP concentration measurements.
Strengths
- 333 total concentration measurements (173 DMS, 160 DMSP) from a defined research expedition.
- Clear temporal coverage of one month during December 1993 and January 1994.
- Well-defined spatial bounding box for the cruise track (+25N to +50N, +6W to +34W).
Limitations
- Sample size is limited to a single cruise, providing a regional snapshot rather than a long-term time series.
- Data is over 30 years old, limiting its relevance for studying current ocean conditions.
- Unknown column structure and missing metadata on sampling depth, water temperature, or salinity limit contextual analysis.
Provenance
- Source
- Measurements made by Chong Nguyen Ba during the Charles Darwin 83 research cruise, part of the Ocean Margin EXchange (OMEX) programme.
- Collection Method
- Concentrations determined by purging, cryogenic trapping, and gas chromatography for DMS, and by gas chromatography for DMSP.
- Time Range
- 1993-12-13 to 1994-01-13
- Freshness
- null
- Geography
- North East Atlantic Ocean, bounded by +25N to +50N latitude and +6W to +34W longitude.
