Description
A 2022 project by DAERA and Tetra Tech assessed historical land uses in Northern Ireland for potential mercury contamination. The dataset shows locations of historical industrial land use with a four-tier risk rating, based on analysis of the NIEA Historical Land Use database and DoE Industrial Profiles. No ground truthing or soil analysis was conducted, so the data indicates potential, not confirmed, contamination.
Use Cases
Prioritizing environmental site investigations based on the four-tier mercury risk rating.
Mapping historical industrial activity and its potential environmental legacy across Northern Ireland.
Supporting regulatory compliance with EU Mercury Regulation 2017/852 by identifying sites for assessment.
Strengths
Risk assessment is based on the NIEA Historical Land Use database and DoE Industrial Profiles.
Provides a structured four-tier risk rating for potential mercury contamination.
Available in multiple geospatial formats (SHP, KML, GEOJSON) for mapping.
Limitations
No ground truthing or soil analysis was performed; data indicates potential, not confirmed contamination.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
