Description
MFIX simulation input files and results, alongside laboratory analyses of volcanic pyroclastic density current material, were gathered under NERC Grant NE/V014242/1. The data includes Fortran90 input files, postprocessed simulation results in Excel, and lab results on particle shape, size, and porosity. Laboratory work was conducted at the University of Oregon from August to December 2021, and numerical simulations ran on the ARCHER2 and Talapas HPC clusters from February to August 2022.
Use Cases
Calibrating and validating Two-Fluid Model simulations based on provided MFIX input files and results.
Analyzing particle packing properties and flow behavior based on laboratory-derived particle size distributions and shape data.
Investigating the Fragmentation-Induced Fluidization hypothesis for long-runout pyroclastic density currents based on the combined simulation and experimental dataset.
Strengths
Dataset combines both numerical simulation results and physical laboratory analyses for cross-validation.
Includes the specific modified MFIX subroutines and input files required for reproducing the simulations.
Work was conducted using high-performance computing resources (ARCHER2, Talapas Cluster) for the simulations.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and overall dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Freshness should be verified; last metadata update was 2026-05-28.
Provenance
Source
British Geological Survey (BGS), associated with NERC Grant NE/V014242/1.
Collection Method
Combination of laboratory analyses (particle characterization) and numerical modelling using the MFIX Computational Fluid Dynamics code.
Time Range
Laboratory analyses: August 2021 to December 2021. HPC simulation work: February 2022 to August 2022.
