Approximately 3,000 samples of Mesozoic-Cenozoic diatoms were collected from sedimentary cores by the Instituto Antartico Argentino. The samples originate from lakes in the South Shetland Islands and Patagonia, and from marine piston cores in the Scotia Sea and northern Weddell Sea. Diatom assemblages primarily indicate Holocene-Late Pleistocene freshwater, brackish, and shallow marine environments.
