Description
Magnetospheric Multiscale 1 spacecraft data includes position, velocity, and magnetic field measurements at a 30-millisecond burst-mode resolution. The data product, created by NASA, uses the Tsyganenko 1989 magnetic field model to calculate magnetic coordinates, footpoints, and activity indices like Dst and Kp. It provides rotational quaternions for transforming coordinates between 12 different systems, including GEI, GSE, and SM.
Use Cases
Modeling disturbed magnetospheric conditions based on the Tsyganenko 1989 field model mentioned in the description
Analyzing spacecraft trajectory and magnetic field line connectivity based on provided footpoints and L-shell values
Transforming spacecraft data between coordinate systems based on the 11 provided rotational quaternions
Correlating spacecraft observations with geomagnetic activity using the included Dst and Kp indices
Strengths
Data is calculated using a specific, documented magnetic field model (Tsyganenko 1989)
Provides high-resolution time-series data at a 30-millisecond sampling rate
Includes multiple derived geophysical variables like magnetic latitude, local time, and loss cone angles
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
Data is stored in a BIN format, which may require specialized tools for access and parsing
