Deuterium tracer experiments in seven benthic chambers across four sites in Port Phillip Bay model bio-irrigation rates. Modelling indicates advection of overlying water occurs at depths of 20-50 cm below the sediment-water interface and at rates between 150 and 700 mL h-1. The data, from Geoscience Australia, shows irrigation rates vary by region within the bay, influencing how quickly the entire water column passes through the sediments.
