Description
Daily per-pixel Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LST&E) data derived from the Aqua satellite's MODIS instrument, with a 1-kilometer spatial resolution in a 1,200 by 1,200 km grid. The pixel temperature value is derived from the MYD11_L2 swath product, and above 30 degrees latitude, pixels with multiple clear-sky observations are averaged. The dataset includes daytime and nighttime surface temperature bands, quality control assessments, observation times, view zenith angles, clear-sky coverages, and emissivities for bands 31 and 32.
Use Cases
Monitoring urban heat island effects based on daily land surface temperature grids.
Modeling surface energy balance and evapotranspiration using daytime and nighttime temperature bands.
Assessing land cover change impacts on surface thermal properties via emissivity values.
Validating climate and weather models with quality-controlled, satellite-derived temperature observations.
Strengths
Provides high-resolution (1km) daily global coverage from a well-established satellite sensor (MODIS/Aqua).
Includes associated quality control layers, observation times, and view angles for data validation.
Cross-platform presence on NASA Earthdata and Data.gov signals its importance and wide usage.
Limitations
The dataset (Version 6) was officially decommissioned on July 31, 2023, directing users to a newer version.
Metadata is incomplete, with unknown column specifics, row counts, and file sizes across all sources.
Above 30 degrees latitude, pixel values represent an average of multiple observations, which may smooth local variability.
Provenance
Source
LPCLOUD (NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center).
Collection Method
Derived from the MYD11_L2 swath product via the MODIS sensor on the Aqua satellite.
Time Range
Daily observations; specific start and end dates are not provided in the input.
Freshness
Last updated dates conflict: one source shows 2026-04-10, another shows 2023-02-26.
Geography
Global coverage in a sinusoidal (SIN) grid projection.
This specific version (V006) is decommissioned. Users are encouraged to use the MYD11A1 Version 6.1 product. License is listed as 'other-license-specified'.
