Description
516 maps comprise the AUSTopo series, which covers the entire continent of Australia at a scale of 1:250,000. Each standard map sheet covers an area of approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude, showing natural and constructed features like infrastructure, vegetation, and contours. The data is provided by Geoscience Australia and was last updated in March 2026.
Use Cases
Terrain analysis based on 50-meter contour intervals mentioned in the description.
Infrastructure planning based on road and rail network data.
Environmental and land-use studies based on vegetation and hydrography features.
Map sheet edge matching and spatial analysis based on the standardized 1:250,000 scale coverage.
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia with 516 map sheets.
Represents the largest scale (1:250,000) at which published topographic maps cover the entire continent.
Standard map sheets cover a consistent area of approximately 150 km east-west by at least 110 km north-south.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data is provided in PDF format, which may require conversion for direct geospatial analysis.
