Description
Absolute dynamic topography data, binned and averaged monthly on 1-degree grids from October 1992 to December 2010. These data were provided by AVISO to support the CMIP5 climate model intercomparison and are derived from sea surface height measured by satellites including Envisat, TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, and OSTM/Jason-2. Ancillary files for observation count and standard error are included on the same grids.
Use Cases
Validating CMIP5 climate model outputs based on the satellite-derived dynamic topography data.
Analyzing long-term trends in ocean surface topography based on the 18-year monthly time series.
Assessing spatial variability of sea surface height anomalies based on the 1-degree gridded data.
Estimating observation uncertainty for satellite altimetry products based on the included standard error grids.
Strengths
18-year temporal coverage from October 1992 to December 2010 provides a long climate record.
Data is spatially resolved on a consistent 1-degree global grid.
Includes ancillary files for observation count and standard error, aiding uncertainty assessment.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data freshness is unverified; the time series ends in 2010.
Provenance
Source
AVISO (French space agency data provider), originally via JPL Earth System Grid.
Collection Method
Derived from sea surface height measured by multiple satellite missions.
Time Range
October 1992 to December 2010
Freshness
Time series ends in December 2010; last update date for the dataset listing is unknown.
