Description
NASA's LANCE Project provides near real-time data products from the ICESat-2 and SMAP satellite missions. The collection includes quick-look versions of ATL series products for inland water, sea ice, terrain, canopy, and atmospheric measurements, as well as SMAP brightness temperature data. These datasets are generated by the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer.
Use Cases
Monitoring inland water body height and dynamics based on surface water height statistics.
Analyzing sea ice freeboard and sea surface height for polar research based on along-track segment data.
Estimating terrain and canopy characteristics for land cover studies based on along-track height and cover estimates.
Studying atmospheric layers and aerosols based on calibrated backscatter profiles and layer height parameters.
Assessing soil moisture conditions indirectly via SMAP brightness temperature data for agricultural or hydrological models.
Strengths
Data is provided in a near real-time (NRT) format, suggesting timeliness for operational monitoring.
Products are derived from advanced satellite instruments like ICESat-2's ATLAS and the SMAP radiometer.
Covers multiple earth system domains: hydrology, cryosphere, land surface, and atmosphere.
Released under a permissive CC-BY-4.0 license, facilitating reuse.
Limitations
Quick-look (QL) data products are provisional and replaced by final products when available, which may affect long-term archival consistency.
Row count, file size, and specific column definitions are unknown, requiring inspection after download.
Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified.
Provenance
Source
NASA LANCE Project, ICESat-2 and SMAP missions.
Collection Method
Satellite remote sensing data acquired by the ATLAS instrument on ICESat-2 and the radiometer on SMAP, processed with standard algorithms.
Time Range
Temporal coverage is not specified in the input.
Freshness
Near real-time (NRT); specific update frequency is unknown.
Geography
Global coverage from satellite orbits.
Quick-look files are temporary and removed once final data products are available. Data is hosted on AWS S3.
