National Base Map - GreyScale MapServer provides seamless topographic greyscale mapping for the whole of Australia, including external territories. The service is produced for the National Map project and combines Geoscience Australia data at smaller scales with OpenStreetMap data at larger scales. It contains layer scale dependencies.
Use Cases
- Create topographic base maps for web applications based on the seamless greyscale mapping service.
- Analyze land features across Australia and its external territories using the integrated Geoscience Australia and OpenStreetMap data.
- Develop scale-dependent visualizations for the National Map project based on the layer scale dependencies.
Strengths
- Provides mapping for the whole of Australia, including Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, and Lord Howe Island.
- Integrates authoritative Geoscience Australia data with community-sourced OpenStreetMap data.
Limitations
- Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to data_gov_au.
