Description
Australia's National Base Map provides seamless topographic colour mapping for the entire country, including outer islands and external territories. The service integrates data from Geoscience Australia, the Australian Antarctic Division, OpenStreetMap, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Topographic information was checked in 2008 using satellite imagery and supplemented in 2009.
Use Cases
Create custom thematic maps based on the underlying cultural, hydrography, and relief themes.
Perform geospatial analysis using the integrated SRTM-derived elevation data.
Serve as a basemap for web mapping applications where custom labeling is required.
Study land cover and vegetation patterns using the aggregated ACLUMP layer.
Strengths
Covers all of Australia, including remote islands and Antarctic territories.
Integrates data from multiple authoritative sources like Geoscience Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Includes specific scale information for island datasets (e.g., 1:30,000 for Christmas Island).
Limitations
Limited field checking was undertaken; some information may not be accurate.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Topographic information was primarily checked in 2008-2009; some features may be outdated.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia, Australian Antarctic Division, OpenStreetMap, Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Collection Method
Compiled from multiple topographic mapping datasets, satellite imagery, and field checks.
Time Range
Data checked in 2008-2009; SRTM data acquired February 2000.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-04-20 01:36:10.673568; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Australia, including Norfolk, Lord Howe, Macquarie, Cocos (Keeling), Christmas, Heard, McDonald Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
