Description
Australia's National Base Map provides seamless topographic colour mapping for the entire country, including outer islands and external territories. The service integrates data from Geoscience Australia, Australian Antarctic Division, OpenStreetMap, and other sources, covering cultural, hydrography, marine, transport, vegetation, and relief themes. Topographic information was checked in 2008 and supplemented in 2009, with limited field checking.
Use Cases
Create custom labeled maps based on the underlying topographic features.
Perform spatial analysis of land use and vegetation patterns using the ACLUMP vegetation layer.
Integrate road network data from OpenStreetMap for transportation planning.
Analyze terrain and relief using the processed SRTM DEM data.
Use bathymetry data from Natural Earth for coastal and marine studies.
Strengths
Covers all of Australia, including outer islands and external territories.
Integrates data from multiple authoritative sources like Geoscience Australia and OpenStreetMap.
Includes processed SRTM DEM data with stripe removal, void filling, and vegetation offset removal.
Limitations
Topographic information was checked in 2008 and supplemented in 2009; data may not be current.
Limited field checking has been undertaken, so some information may not be accurate.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia, Australian Antarctic Division, OpenStreetMap, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Natural Earth.
Collection Method
Aggregated from multiple mapping datasets and programs.
Time Range
SRTM data acquired February 2000; topographic data checked 2008-2009.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-04-16 15:57:43.384859; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Australia, Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, Macquarie Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, Heard and McDonald Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory.
This version of the base map does not have any labeling; labels must be added separately.
